Dorset

Dorset Horn: One of the oldest British breeds, both sexes are horned.

Poll Dorset: Two varieties

One type originated in Australia during the 1950’s, the

other in the USA in the 1940's.

There has been some crossbreeding in the Devon area of the UK of Poll Dorset ewes to a Bluefaced Leicester tup to produce a very smart crossbred ewe lamb.

Also very popular is a four-way cross, typically done by using North of England Mules bred to the Dorset to produce a very versatile crossbred ewe that has all the Mule’s qualities with the added benefit of out of season lambing.

The outstanding characteristic of the Dorset is the ability of the ewes to breed at almost anytime of the year, with outstanding milking ability. Ewes are of medium size, with the skin color being pink, and the face, legs and ears white.

Avg. lambing percentage: 170%

Avg. ram weight: 275 lbs.

Avg. ewe weight: 180 lbs.

Wool:

  • Down type, short wool
  • White
  • 3” – 4” staple length
  • Count 54’s – 58’s
